William (Bill) Toothill at the Altrincham Garrick

The other outstanding player at the Altrincham Garrick in my time was William (Bill) Toothill.

He was superb as Crocker-Harris in Terence Rattigan’s The Browning Version – a tale of a schoolmaster who becomes known to the boys as ‘The Himmler of the lower fifth’.

This is Bill Toothill, sitting looking regal, with beard and moustache – in a play called The Rope of Seven Cords in which he played the seer Nostradamus.
